Latest Street Heat Sparks: December 12, 2007

December is Wool Socks month! Over 100 wool socks have been purchased and distributed. 100 more will be purchased this week!

Street Heat began in August 2007 with a group of people getting together, with a vision of unity, wondering how they could provide relief to the ever-bourgeoning population of homeless on the streets of Vancouver.

Since that time, over 50 volunteers have hit the streets armed with warmth, compassion, and critical warm winter items including rain ponchos, blankets, gloves, scarves, pants, sweaters, and socks. Socially conscious companies such as Business Objects, Cossette Communications and many more have been instrumental to the overwhelming success of this project, providing truckloads of hidden gems for our neighbours on the street. Integrative healing and yoga communities of The Space and Prana Yoga Teacher College, have fuelled the drive for connection, community and relief, by facilitating this amazing direct connection with the homeless, organizing volunteers and donations.

Volunteers are struck by the incredibly genuine gratitude and warm appreciation of those they encounter, benefiting ten-fold from the initiative of their giving. Donations continue to pour in, and we still need volunteers to deliver to the streets. The more we learn about the needs of the homeless and the impact we can have, the louder the call for action becomes. Groups go out on Friday afternoons. If you would like to donate a few hours of your time, simply call 604.682.2121 and we will happily facilitate this for you.

Donations of clothing or money for the purchase of wool socks are accepted at Prana Yoga Centre 15 minutes before or after regular scheduled classes (otherwise, doors will not be open please see prana schedule)
